Pope County Museum to Host Art Exhibit

New original artwork by Nory McNelis will be on display at the Pope County Museum through the month of July. The exhibit titled “Minnewaska Summer” features a series of original oil paintings of Pope County scenes past and present. The opening reception will be held Thursday, July 7, 2011 from 6-8 pm.

“I have always made art. I am passionate enough about art to pursue it daily,” said McNelis. Five years ago McNelis bought a cabin on Lake Minnewaska where she spends 6 months of each year as a Starbuck resident. “I love the open prairies and sparkling blue lakes around the area. Lake Minnewaska is forever changing and interesting.”

The exhibit features colorful oil paintings.  Many are based on black and white photos of Pope County’s past from the Museum collection. “I start with the black and white image and take my color inspiration from the sky and water out my studio window by Lake Minnewaska.”

This activity is funded in part by a grant from the Lake Region Arts Council with McKnight Foundation funding. The Pope County Museum is located at 809 South Lakeshore Drive in Glenwood. Call 320-624-3293 for more information.
